New Courses
The Distance Education Council (DEC), on the recommendation of a Joint Committee of UGC-AICTE-DEC, recognized the Institute of Distance Learning of the University and 5 programmes have been started in 2010.

The Indian Nursing Council has permitted P.B.B.Sc. (Nursing) Course.

The Dental Council of India has approved Dental Operating Room Assistant (DORA) Course.

The University has started Ph. D. Programme in the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Biotechnology & Bioinformatics and Management. Pre-Ph.D. Course-work has been made an integral part of the Ph.D. programme. Full-time Ph.D. scholars are also provided university scholarships.

With a multidisciplinary approach from faculties of various departments, the University has started free Cleft Lip & Palate Centre in the Dental College which is one of the few such centers in educational institutions.

We are amongst very few universities in Maharashtra to have 1 Gbps Internet Connectivity for its campuses under National Knowledge Network. This is highly beneficial for integrating our knowledge with the advancement in other countries thus increases student’s understanding of the world around them.

From its very inception the Vidyapeeth has made efforts to move away from the traditional lecture-mode of teaching, to a more interactive mode, wherein, the emphasis is more on problem-solving capabilities of students. The University believes that rigorous and relevant education is a product of effective learning which takes place when standards, curriculum, instruction and assessment are interrelated and reinforce each other. It may be mentioned that:

  1. The University has a mentoring system under which every student is assigned a teacher as a mentor. The mentor advice the students on his physical, social, ethical educational and behavioural needs. Further, a number of Value-added Courses, Bridge Courses and Audit Courses have been introduced in various programmes. The University focuses on excellence and philosophy of education with a human touch.
  2. Doubt clearing classes are held to help students to clear their difficulties. Lesson plans for various courses have been prepared and uploaded on the institutional website so that students come well-prepared in classrooms.
  3. Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune has adopted student-centered teaching-learning processes so that students are capable to apply high rigor knowledge in a relevant real world setting and promoting the spirit of enquiry among the young minds leading to synergy. The University Education Technology Cell conducts workshops on Microteaching, Problem-Based Learning, Integrated Teaching and other aspects of teaching methodologies for faculty members and PG students

With the highly dedicated scientific aptitude of the faculty and proactive encouragement of the management, there has been a steady increase in the number of publications.

Out of the above publications, 62 papers have been published in SCOPUS, Web of Science databases.

The University has received funds from various external agencies including WHO, ICMR, DBT, DST and DRDO. It is noteworthy to mention here that Dr. Neelu Nawani (Assistant Professor, Biotechnology Institute), along with two other workers from University of Pune and University of Skovde, Sweden, have received the Swedish International Development Corporation Agency, Sweden (SIDA) grant of SEK 45,00,000/- equivalent to Rs. 2.925 crores for research proposal “Bioremediation of toxic metals and other pollutants for protecting human health and ecosystem”. In order to encourage the faculty to undertake research special budgetary provisions, of about 3 crore annually, are made by the Vidyapeeth.

The University has framed Rules for “Incentives for Research Outputs” under which faculty and students are provided with special incentives for writing research papers, attending national and international conferences, seminars and workshops, writing books or chapters in books. Thirty eight (38) Research Projects have been sanctioned by the ICMR since April 2010. Our undergraduate students have presented research papers/posters at national/international conferences. A significant number of clinical trials are being conducted in collaboration with reputed pharmaceutical companies after proper ethical clearance.

The Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth has a strong interface with society at different levels. The Out-Patient Departments of the Medical, Dental and Physiotherapy Colleges attract on an average about 1750 patients per day from the lower- and middle-income groups. The extension services offered by the Vidyapeeth in the area of health care include:

  1. Diagnostic health camps in remote villages with free treatment.
  2. Blood-collection and dissemination through regular blood donation camps.
  3. Evening Dental OPD for industrial workers.
  4. Participation in national health programmes such as Pulse-polio Immunization, Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme and National Leprosy Eradication Programme.
  5. Organisation of various events such as health exhibitions, essay completions, role plays to commemorate specific days in relation to particular health themes, viz. World Health Organization Day, World Diabetes Day, World Tuberculosis Day, etc.

In addition the Vidyapeeth runs a Rural Health Training Centre at Alandi, which caters to several villages, and an Urban Health Training Centre at Bhosari at the outskirts of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. These Centres conduct OPD, diagnostic health camps, undertake immunization train interns organize school health programmes and conduct community surveys. The Vidyapeeth finances all their activities. Dr. D. Y. Patil Hospital is a teaching hospital which offers a variety of free services to indoor patients including dietary services, laboratory and radiological investigations. Sophisticated investigations like CT Scan and MRI are provided at an absolutely concessional rates. The OPD complex is fully functional at the new Hi-Tech hospital building. The new Hi-Tech hospital will have 21 Operation Theatres and will cater to super specialty services such as Cathlab, Bone Marrow Transplantation, IVF, Joint Replacement Surgeries, etc. In order to keep our faculty and students updated with the recent advances in their field of specialization, the University have recently procured large number sophisticated and the state-of-the-art additional equipments, such as High-End MRI, which will be second unit in our hospital, Digital OPG, Endodontic Operating Microscope, Deca-head Microscope and many more.

The University has organized a number of States, National and International Conferences, seminars and Workshops. Some of the major events held and planned in future are as follows:

National Conference on Anatomical Science:

The University as the partner in collaboration with Anatomical Society of India arranged 3 day 58th National Conference of Anatomy & one day preconference CME. About 1100 delegates from various Medical colleges of India participated in various scientific deliberations.

State Level Nursing Conference:

The University organized State Level Conference of Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI) on 30th September & 1st October 2010. About five hundred nurses from various districts of Maharashtra participated in the conference and deliberated on the “Challenges in Nursing Education, Service and Community”.

ICDRO World Congress:

The University, as the chief knowledge partner, in collaboration with International Clinical Dental Research Organization (ICDRO), arranged scientific activity on Implantology, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics from 11th to 16th January 2011. International dental experts from USA, UK, Canada and other countries presented their achievements in scientific sessions at the Dental College.

Hands on Workshop on Lingual Orthodontics:

The Dental College of the University arranged a workshop on Lingual Orthodontics from 21st to 23rd January 2011. Dr. Rafi Romano, world-renowned teacher and practitioner of Lingual Orthodontics trained our Post graduate students. Delegates who have attended the workshop will now be able to practice this kind of orthodontics in India.

National Seminar on Frontiers in Biotechnology:

The Biotechnology & Bioinformatics Institute of the University organized National Seminar on "Frontiers in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics" at Pune, India on 12th February 2011.

12th Indo-US Cytometry Workshop:

The University will be organizing workshop on “Applications of Laser Flow Cytometry in Biomedical Research and Clinical care” jointly with the “Asia Task Force of the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry and the International Clinical Cytometry Society” on 19th and 20th October 2011. With the express purpose of interfacing Indian researchers with experts in Cytometry from India and abroad.

Indo-US Global Education Summit:

The University, in association with Alliance for U.S. India Business (AUSIB), will be organizing Indo-US Global Education Summit on “Strengthening Indo-US Higher Education Partnerships” during 8th to 10th December 2011 at Pune. About 70 American universities and 300 Indian Universities are expected to participate in this summit.

International Collaborations:

The University has entered into the collaboration with the Pennsylvania State University, College of Medicine at Hershey, USA to train our students for 3 to 4 months.

The Naropa University, Colorado, USA and the University shall collaborate by which the Faculty of the Naropa and the DPU shall conduct programmes for the middle level corporate executives the 14-16 week short-term Certificate courses on 'Authentic Leadership Programme'. Based on the experience gained the scope of the collaboration shall be widened and deepened.

The University is keen on achieving excellence not only in academics but also in extra-curricular activities. Our students have participated in various cultural and sports events, organized by the University and other organizations. Many of them have excelled in music and sports at the national level and brought laurels to the University. Ms. Pooja Jaiswal, Dental student represented India in Bharatnatyam at Dubai and won 1st Prize. Eight MBBS students have participated in a symposium on “Target Red” (Global Warming) and put up a cultural show at the World Congress of IPPNW, at Basel, Switzerland.

I am delighted to mention that our faculty and students have represented the University at various national/international fora and have received national and international recognitions/awards for their outstanding contributions. To mention some of them are -

  1. Dr. S. K. Biswas (Prof. & HOD Orthopedics) and Dr. Shalin Maheshwari (PG Resident-Orthopedics) presented a paper on “A Prospective Study of Fracture of Phalanx & Metacarpals of the Hand with External Fixator/Hybrid Fixation as a Day Care Management” at the 7th SICOT/SIROT Annual International Conference at Gothenberg, Sweden.
  2. Dr. Vishwas Chaugule (Professor & HoD – Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery) was invited as Guest Speaker at 32nd Asia Pacific Dental Conference held at Colombo, Sri Lanka.
  3. Dr. Jayesh Rahalkar (Professor – Orthodontics) was invited as Resource person at Dental Conference held at Dubai.
  4. Dr. Sachin Sarode (Reader – Oral Pathology) has published six papers in Indexed journals such as J. of Oral Oncology & OOO.
  5. Dr. Sachin Sarode has been invited for presentation at 4th Annual Congress and Exposition of Molecular Diagnostics & at 4th World Cancer Congress at China. He has also been invited at International Conference and Exhibition on Virology at Baltimore, USA.
  6. Dr. Pushkar Waknis has published five papers in Index Journals such as International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery & Journal of Craniofacial Surgery.
  7. Dr. A. L. Kakrani (Dean of Faculty of Medicine) was invited by Elsevier’s Publishers U.K. to be a member of International Advisory Board of 21st Edition of Davidson’s Textbook of Medicine. Dr. S. A Kanitkar (Professor of Medicine) is nominated to serve as member Speciality Advisory Board of forthcoming 13th edition of Mcleod's clinical Medicine published by Elsevier publishers, UK.
  8. Dr. Neelu Nawani (Assistant Professor – Biotechnology Institute) won best paper ward at International Congress of Environment, Thailand.
  9. Dr. D. Saldanha (Professor – Psychiatry Department) received “Col. Kripal Singh Award 2010” for the paper “Cognitive deficits due to thermal stress: An exploratory study of Indian Soldiers in deserts” at the 63rd National Conference of Indian Psychiatric Society held at New Delhi. He has also appointed as Advisor in UPSC.
  10. Dr. A. N. Gaikwad (Professor – Medicine) received “Marathwada Bhushan Award” for his social service.
  11. Dr. S. R. Agarkhedkar, (Professor & Head – Pediatrics) participated in a multicentric study of Bivalent Oral polio vaccine. The work was published in The Lancet which is one of the most reputed medical journals. (Immunogenicity of bivalent types 1 and 3 oral poliovirus vaccine: a randomised, double-blind, controlled trial Lancet. 2010 Nov 13;376(9753):1682-8. (Epub 2010 Oct 25). This WHO supported study gave a new direction to the planning of polio eradication programme.
  12. Dr. Hemant Deshpande (Prof & Head – Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology) is nominated on the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee of Medical Council of India.
  13. A poster entitled “A Study to Evaluate the Comparative Effect of Pantoprazole & Omeprazole on Neuromuscular Junction and their Interaction with Vecuronium and Succinylcholine in-vivo in rats” presented by Dr. Amol Chaudhari was awarded 1st Prize amongst 793 posters for which the Gold medal was awarded by Hon’ble Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.
  14. A Text Book of “High Risk Pregnancy” authored by Dr. Hemant Deshpande (Prof & Head – Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology) released by Dr. P. C. Mahapatra, President of All India Obstetrics & Gynaecology Federation.
  15. Dr. Siddharth Dubhashi (Associate Professor – Department of Surgery) received Bharat Jyoti Award by Dr. Bhishma Narain Singh, Former Governor of Assam & Tamilnadu, for his Meritorious Services, Outstanding Performance and Remarkable Role
  16. Dr. Rachita Munjal (PG Resident – Obstetrics & Gynaecology) got the first prize in paper presentation at 3 conferences, 52nd National Obstetrics & Gynaecology Conference held at Hyderabad, YUVA FOGSI WEST ZONE National Conference held at Mahabaleshwar 25th Maharashtra State Obstetrics & Gynaecology Conference held at Nagpur.
  17. Dr. Gaurang Baxi (Assistant Professor) has been selected for the FAIMER (Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research) Fellowship program, from Philadelphia, USA.
  18. Dr. Albin Jerome (Asso. Professor & Head of the Department of Neuro – Physiotherapy) got First prize for Paper presentation at Annual National Conference of Physical Therapy held at New Delhi.
  19. Dr. Tushar Palekar (Principal – Padmashee Dr. D.Y.Patil College of Physiotherapy, Pune) received “Significant Contribution Award” for contribution towards professional services from the Indian Association of Physiotherapists at the Annual National Conference of Physiotherapy held at Pune.
